What's in a Name?
Those of you who know me probably know about my "name hobby". I love names. I have long owned multiple babyname books; even before I was married or even considering having children. I am just fascinated with names and their meanings. I believe the meaning of a name is very powerful. So for someone like me, you know that my first child's name has been carefully thought out.
I have a list of rules which will apply to the names of all our children. The two most important are, first, each child will have three names, one of which will be in his or her native language. Second, each full name must have a complete meaning when taken as a whole. There are other rules but I won't bore you with them!
So what IS in Miriam's name? Miriam means "sorrow or bitterness". It is the name that Mary (my mother's name) is derived from. It is also the name of a good friend of ours and long time friend of Brian's who we would be very happy to have our daughter emulate.
Josephine means "Jehovah shall add". It is simply a name I have always liked. Desta is an Ethiopian/Amharic name which translates to "joy". It is a beautiful name we hope our daughter will be proud of.
So her full name means.... "To sorrow Jehovah shall add joy!". This is both what Miriam is to me--the joy God has given in place of my sorrow--and the wish I wish for her--that her past losses will be replaced by God's true joy.
